KUKK – Cultural Critique Club

The joint film club of the Department of Hungarian Ethnography and Anthropology at Babeș–Bolyai University and the Tranzit Foundation present this year’s open seminar for the courses Critical Cultural Studies and Film and Anthropology:

This week’s film:
Róbert Lakatos: Spílerek/ Casino Transylvaniae (2005, 26 min.) – an experimental documentary in Hungarian and Romanian.
The screening will be followed by a discussion in Hungarian.

The film takes place in several locations: the Comănești train station (in Moldavia), the Mărășești-Comănești-Miercurea Ciuc passenger train, and Cluj. In the film, everything is portrayed very realistically and true to the era. We see scenes of everyday life, such as Moldovan musicians in masks on a crowded street, stray dogs approaching the violinist riding his bicycle with somewhat exaggerated enthusiasm, or when the cheerful group of card players traveling by train asks the musicians there to play some music. In the film, nothing seems forced or artificial; what we see are elements of our cultural heritage that still exist in everyday life.
