KUKK – Cultural Critique Club

The joint film club of the Department of Hungarian Ethnography and Anthropology at Babeș–Bolyai University and the Tranzit Foundation present this year’s open seminar for the courses Critical Cultural Studies and Film and Anthropology:
Mentors: Biró Botond, Erőss Réka, Seprődi Attila
Academic coordinator of the seminar: Csilla Könczei, cultural researcher, associate professor

This time we will watch a film about the beginnings of electronic music in Hungary, a replica of the previous film, András Kovács’ film, Extasy between 7 and 10 (Extázis 7-től 10-ig), about the first wave of beat in the 1960s:
György Czabán, Csilla Győri: Extasy between 10 and 7 (Extázis tíztől-hétig), 2002. 47’
Hungarian short film. Production Company: Közgáz Vizuális Brigád Kft.
The screening will be followed by a discussion in Hungarian.
Moderator: Grimm Péter Endre

One of the film’s directors is György Czabán (Budapest, 1957), who is a photographer, film director, producer, editor, writer, and, among other things, the founder of KVB (Közgáz Vizuális Brigád) and a program maker at Tilos Rádió.
The co-director is Csilla Győri, who is a producer, editor, and production manager. She has been a member of KVB since 1997, a program maker at Tilos Radio since 2011, and one of its curators since 2013.

The film offers a glimpse into the life of Hungarian disc jockey Zsolt Palotai (1961), known by his stage name DJ Palotai. One of the first important milestones of his career was 1989, as this was the year he opened the “Tilos az Á” club in Budapest with his friends. According to their original intentions, they opened the venue primarily for themselves, as a place where they could have fun. He could never have imagined that it would become a beloved spot for the entire city. It got its name from the translation of the famous sign in Winnie-the-Pooh, the ‘Trespassers Will’.

“A Kossuth Prize for Zsolt Palotai!” – demanded the audience in 1997 at the Sziget Festival, in front of the Tilos Rádió tent. Zsolt Palotai started his DJ career at Tilos az Á, and by the end of the 90s, he became the “pope of DJs”. The son of an Olympic champion football referee, he provided inspiration to many young DJs on Tilos Rádió and at parties. His performances often gave a completely new twist to an event. If you asked him about his style, he said, free style. Since January 2003, he could be heard live on Tilos Rádió. The film is about him and the subculture that surrounded him.” – https://port.hu/…/extazis-tiztol-hetig…/movie-54987
